Dharwad, also known as Dharwar, is a city located in the northwestern part of the Indian state of Karnataka. It is the headquarters of the Dharwad district of Karnataka and forms a contiguous urban area with the city of Hubballi.
Over generations, Dharwad served as a stopping point for travellers and in a way has acted like a door between the western mountains and the plains. No wonder then that the term “Dharwad” originates from the Sanskrit phrase ‘dwarawata’, with ‘dwara’ signifying “door” and ‘wata’ indicating “town”. This important town is located 425 km northwest of the state’s capital Bengaluru.
